Controller

Reports to: Head of Accounting (CEO until filled)

Position Overview

The Controller will serve as the on-site leader of the accounting function, with full responsibility for managing the department’s day-to-day operations and close process. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting while strengthening the accounting function’s ability to support real estate performance and business decision-making.

The Controller will oversee multiple accounting disciplines, provide leadership to the team, and partner cross-functionally to ensure consistency, accountability, and operational alignment across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership

  • Lead and manage the accounting department, including oversight of property accounting, job cost accounting, treasury, and financial reporting
  • Establish clear expectations, provide coaching, and drive accountability across the team
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, professionalism, and results orientation
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability
  • Serve as the primary accounting liaison to other departments, ensuring alignment on financial data, systems, and procedures

Close Process Management

  • Own and manage the monthly and annual close processes
  • Ensure coordination across accounting functions to meet deadlines and maintain accuracy
  • Maintain and improve close process documentation and workflows

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Align workflows across accounting disciplines to ensure consistency and efficiency
  • Resolve cross-functional issues and maintain data integrity across systems
  • Support ongoing enhancements to accounting systems and data structures

Real Estate Financial Oversight

  • Apply real estate accounting expertise to review and oversee financial reporting
  • Support the development of property- and portfolio-level performance insights
  • Contribute to the evolution of reporting capabilities as systems and processes mature

Qualifications

Required

  • Significant experience in real estate accounting, with exposure to multifamily assets preferred
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing accounting teams
  • Strong knowledge of financial close processes and multi-entity accounting environments
  • Ability to interpret financial data and connect it to operational and asset performance
  • Experience working with accounting systems and financial reporting tools

Preferred

  • Experience with real estate accounting platforms such as Yardi, MRI, or similar systems
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, or Tableau
  • Experience supporting or leading system implementations or process improvement initiatives

What Success Looks Like

  • 0–6 Months: Establish leadership within the team, assume ownership of the close process, and gain a full understanding of workflows and systems
  • 6–12 Months: Improve coordination across functions, enhance processes, and strengthen team performance
  • Long Term: Enable the accounting function to deliver accurate, timely reporting and meaningful performance insights that support business growth
